I felt like mixing it up this weekend and making a cute tote bag. I’ve had this pattern for years and just never find time to just stop and make it. I was recently able to buy a cute jelly roll of some cute Riley Blake Fabric (Kiss me, Kate).
I’ve never done any type of quilting, but this pattern gives you the look of a quilted bag that any level sewist can follow.
The Mondo Bag is a pattern kit by Quiltsmart. It comes with instructions and includes the grided interfacing pieces to get you started. You can also watch a great video to follow along. I bought this kit at a local quilt store. I’ve also noticed some quilt shops sell the interfacing panels without the instructions.
You’ll need 192 Outer Squares (2.5 x 2.5) and 4 Handles, fabric for bag lining and fusible fleece. The jelly roll I purchased included 18 different prints and I used them all.
The fabric then just gets laid out onto the gridded interfacing and you simply press fabric. Folding on each grid line you start sewing each short row with 1/4″ seams, then you sew the long rows in the same way. All details are in the instructions and video. Now you have this cute faux quilted panel (repeat 4 times)
